Workshops

@Black Sheep Craft Shop

  • Learn how to make a yubinuki from the base up, in this class for complete beginners.

    • Make a base and divide it into sections

    • Learn nami-sashi (standard stitch) and mawashi-sashi (wraparound stitch)

    • Complete two yubinuki, one each in the traditional uroko (scales) and seigaiha (wave) motifs.

    • Learn pattern variations you can use to make your yubinuki your own.

    Enough materials are provided that students should be able to experiment at home once the class has concluded.

  • Build upon the skills from 101 by learning hiraki-sashi (open stitch) and make three yubinuki in traditional motifs:

    • Hasukai (diagonal)

    • Tateuroko (vertical scales)

    • Genroku (named for the rounded square shape of kimono sleeves)

    The class will also include instruction on pattern variation and basic modifications so that students can continue to experiment at home.

  • Learn the final two stitching techniques, kasane-sashi (layered) and kuguri-sashi (under), by making three yubinuki in traditional motifs:

    • Kotoji (koto bridge)

    • Ichimatsu (checked)

    • Kawari-ichimatsu (alternative checked) motifs.

    The class will also include instruction on pattern variation and basic modifications so that students can continue to experiment at home.

Intermediate and advanced classes will be added over time.
